Home Inspection 101

Your home inspector will conduct a thorough inspection of your property. He or she will look in places you never think about to assure that all systems are working well and are safe for you, your family, and the environment.

Three organizations provide standards of practice for what the inspector should examine inside and outside your home. The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) applies a set of nationwide guidelines for each aspect of your structure. The California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) employs similar guidelines for home inspectors in California. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNaChi) sets international standards for home inspection. All three organizations provide a Code of Ethics for professional home inspectors. You can read them by clicking the links to each organization.

Our 101s introduce you to different component inspection guidelines so you have an idea of what your inspector will examine as well as what is not required. Your written report will cover all of the various components that comprise a professional home inspection.
